Kurz vor Ende des amerikanischen Sezessionskriegs desertiert der Südstaatler John Warner (George Hilton), nachdem er die Nachricht erhält, dass seine Freundin Rosa (Annabella Incontrera) kurz vor der Geburt ihres ersten Kindes steht. Nach seiner Festnahme gelingt ihm gemeinsam mit zwei weiteren Soldaten, Lucky (Alberto de Mendoza) und Jim, die Flucht. Im Heimatdorf von Rosa ist inzwischen die Cholera ausgebrochen. Ihr strenger Vater Don Pedro Sandoval (Ernest Borgnine) vertreibt die drei Soldaten mitsamt dem neugeborenen Sohn vom Hof. Die Männer machen sich mit dem Baby auf die Suche nach Nachrung und Wasser, bleiben jedoch erfolglos und das Kind stirbt. daraufhin sammelt Warner einen Trupp Gesetzloser um sich und zieht auf einen Rachefeldzug gegen alle, die ihm einst die Hilfe verweigert haben.
