Shogun 2 führt die Total-War-Serie zurück an ihren Ursprung, nämlich ins alte Japan. Dort bietet die Neuauflage des ersten Serienteils die gewohnte Mischung aus rundenbasierter Reichsverwaltung sowie Echtzeit-Schlachten zu Lande und zur See. Insgesamt entfaltet Shogun 2 weniger Vielfalt als sein ausufernder Vorvorgänger Empire, stattdessen hat Creative Assembly die Spielmechanik entschlackt und verfeinert, unter anderem mit neuen Rollenspiel-Elementen.
