The development in turbocharging of internal combustion engines has proceeded so rapidly that the publishers and I have decided to add a supplement to the book "Supercharging of Internal Com- bustion Engines" published in 1978. Since the greatest progress has been made in the field of turbocharging of automotive engines, this supplement is confined to this area. When the first edition of the German original "Auf ladung von Verbrennungsmotoren" was published in 1975 turbocharging of automotive engines was insig- nificant except for some types for racing drives. Today nearly all large car manufacturing companies have turbocharged spark ig- nition or Diesel engines for commercial vehicles on the market or to be developed.
