Nick Irons, ein heruntergekommener und verschuldeter Ex-Tennis-Profi, erhält von seinem Buchmacher Gil Robbins eine letzte Chance. Er soll dessen tennisbegeistertem Sohn Joel eine Saison lang als Coach zur Seite stehen. Doch Robbins verlangt, dass Nick dem Jungen das Tennisspielen gründlich verleidet, weil der ihn in seiner Firma haben will. So ziehen beide von einem Turnier zum nächsten ohne das Nick sich als Trainer motiviert zeigt, aber Joel ist ein weitaus begabterer Tennisspieler als ihm zugetraut wird.
