Now, in the year 2025, Bay Area thrash metal icons TESTAMENT return with their fourteenth studio album, Para Bellum, via Nuclear Blast Records. Taking its cues from the Latin phrase "Si vis pacem, para bellum"—"If you want peace, prepare for war"—the album is both a battle cry and an observation of humanity's uneasy relationship with its own creations. As technology accelerates and disunity grows, Para Bellum sees TESTAMENT reflecting on modern chaos through music that is relevant, poignant, and unwaveringly human.
True to its legacy, Para Bellum is a masterclass in dynamic thrash songwriting, led by founding guitarist Eric Peterson and vocalist Chuck Billy, who continue to lead the band with vision and strength. Each track on the album stands on its own—unique in structure, tonality, and atmosphere—but together they create a record that flows seamlessly, like a puzzle, through eras and styles.
To the delight of many devoted Testament fans, this album features a ballad for the first time in many years.
A key addition to Para Bellum was the addition of powerful drummer Chris Dovas, whose precision, speed, and instinctive dynamics infuse the album with fresh energy. Working closely with Peterson throughout the writing process, Dovas helped shape the song structures, streamlined the workflow, and brought a versatility that enhances the album's contemporary feel without deviating from the Testament sound. Alongside Peterson, Alex Skolnick's guitar work remains both sharp and exploratory. Rounding out the rhythm section is the inimitable Steve DiGiorgio, whose stomping basslines add a unique bassiness and technical depth, seamlessly pairing with Dovas's expressive drumming.
From its first note to its last breath, Para Bellum is an album of warriors, forged in chaos and destined to survive the wars to come.
