Description
This course provides a comprehensive and practical introduction to real-time geotechnical monitoring during Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) excavation and demonstrates how these data can be used to continuously refine and validate the geological model. Designed for geologists, geotechnical engineers, tunnel designers, and field supervisors, the course bridges the gap between on-site TBM operations and subsurface interpretation.
Participants will learn how key TBM operational parameters-such as thrust force, cutterhead torque, penetration rate, face pressure, screw conveyor behavior, and tool wear-reflect the mechanical response of the ground. By analyzing these signals in real time, it becomes possible to identify changes in lithology, detect fractured or water-bearing zones, recognize transitions between soils and rocks, and anticipate stability issues ahead of the face.
The course explains how to integrate TBM parameter trends with geological and geophysical datasets, borehole logs, geotechnical tests, and pre-excavation models. Special attention is given to the update and validation of the geological model during excavation, allowing practitioners to reduce uncertainty, optimize support design, and enhance safety. Case studies demonstrate how real-time monitoring improves decision-making in complex ground conditions, such as mixed-face excavation, squeezing ground, swelling clays, and pressurized environments.
Hands-on exercises will show participants how to process TBM data, detect anomalies, build dashboards, and implement predictive tools for risk mitigation. By the end of the course, attendees will be capable of transforming raw TBM telemetry into actionable insights that improve excavation performance, confirm geological assumptions, and support adaptive design strategies in tunnelling projects.
