Description
Cancer remains the second most powerful killer in the Western world, with a terrifying statistics of almost one out of three humans being diagnosed in their lifetime. In recent years we have learned that certain physical activities, especially aerobic ones, can protect us and reduce cancer risks. In this course you will learn the basic ingredients of exercise oncology, the rising science of harnessing physical fitness to improve general health and cancer patient outcome. Based on a unique research perspective that integrates in vivo (mice), in silico (computer models) and clinical (human subjects) studies, the course will focus on the effects of endurance training on the initiation and progression of solid tumors. We shall discuss these effects, the hypothetical mechanisms behind them, and their potential implications for prognosis, diagnostics, and therapy. Our main targets will be breast cancer, prostate cancer and liver cancer. In all three organs, there is ample evidence, accumulated over more than two decades now, that aerobic fitness enhances anti-cancer immune competence. By looking at this evidence and learning about the scientific methods that helped generate it, we shall expose the truth behind the platitude "exercise is good for you", also emphasizing the remaining gaps and challenges in transforming this truth into a clinically accepted practice.
