Digital communication systems can be broadly classified as transmission, switching and networking systems. Transmission systems provide the connectivity over networks that often span several countries or regions. The evolution of digital transmission systems has been nothing short of spectacular, propelled by the advances in materials and component technology. The ITU-Study Groups have played the role of standards body, guiding the growth and deployment of technologies, as a result of which we have currently three generations of digital transmission systems in existence today, the PDH (plesiochronous digital hierarchy), SDH (synchronous digital hierarchy) and OTH (optical transport hierarchy). Each generation has a standardised hierarchy for multiplexing channels, equipment for multiplexing/de-multiplexing, method for providing access to channels and aggregates to support various services and facilitating management and supervisory functions. Though these hierarchies are covered in a limited way in various books, there is no single book that covers all the hierarchies under one roof and explains the intricacies of hierarchical multiplexing, network management and the range of applications supported on them from the practical aspect.
The book is organized into three parts: Part I features PDH systems, Part II, SDH systems and Part III, OTH systems. The book begins with a tribute to Claude E. Shannon, the father of IT. The fruits of Shannon's work are being enjoyed today by the entire humanity, either directly or indirectly.
