Smart antennas is one very powerful means to fulfill these demands. In this work the use of smart antennas, deployed at either the access point or both the access point and the mobile terminal is investigated. In order to find out how the evolution within wireless communication will continue during the ten years to come, a scenario analysis is performed where driving forces are identified and scenarios are created. Smart antennas are comprised of a number of individual antennas and associated signal processors which provide the "smart" portion. Smart antennas can use either, or both, for the signal transmission and the signal reception. The major advantages to using a smart antenna are reduction in overall system power, reduction in communication interference, and increase in system capacity and improve in power efficiency. Smart antenna at the receiver provides reduction of signal loss in multipath fading, which means more overall robust signal quality independent of the variations of the transmitted signal due to the physical environment and other electromagnetic interferences. For mobile applications, there are fewer dropped calls, reduced areas of low-signal/no-signal or dead zones better reception, reduction of bit error rate, reduction in handoff and higher data rates. Smart antennas have received increasing interest for improving the performance of wireless radio systems. These systems of antennas include a large number of techniques that attempt to enhance the received signal, suppress all interfering signals, and increase capacity, in general.
This book makes a detailed description for the smart antenna. It introduces the basic concepts and historical sources of smart antennas. At the same time, the function of smart antenna in optimizing system is discussed in detail. The use of smart antenna technology in mobile communications is arousing great concern. The smart antenna can effectively improve the signal-to-noise ratio and system performance and capacity. The main purpose of this book is to provide an overview of the current state of information in the area of smart antennas, and to describe how they can be used in wireless systems.
Thus, this book provides a basic model for determining the angle of arrival for incoming signals, the appropriate antenna beam forming, and the adaptive algorithms that are currently used for array processing. Moreover, it is shown how smart antennas, with spatial processing, can provide substantial additional improvement when used with TDMA and CDMA digital-communication systems.
Smart antenna technology has the potential to significantly increase the efficient use of the spectrum in wireless communication applications in comparison to the existing methods in use. Through intelligent control of the transmission and reception of signals, capacity and coverage in mobile wireless networks can be significantly improved.
